Photofacial Light Therapy in Walnut Creek CA Area

What is an IPL photofacial?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. This is a special treatment that administers broad-spectrum light deep into the skin. In doing so, it helps in reducing the appearance of pigmentation issues such as sunspots or freckles and reduces redness, and stimulates collagen growth. With regular IPL photofacial therapies, patients can clarify their complexion and improve skin texture and tone.

How often should I undergo IPL photofacials?

Patients interested in completely rejuvenating their skin will want to undergo several treatments for the best possible results. While results can be seen in a single appointment, a series of treatments spaced over time will provide cumulatively improved results. Treatments can be done several weeks apart until improvement has been achieved, and then continued treatments to maintain the results.

When should I schedule my photofacial?

While IPL photofacials can be performed at any time of the year, we often recommend doing it during the winter months when you are spending less time outdoors. Patients should not have tanned skin before their treatment since it can result in uneven pigmentation. Additionally, we do not recommend scheduling a session before going on vacation where you will be exposed to the sun more often than usual, as this can counteract the results we are trying to achieve when reducing sun damage on the skin.

Are IPL photofacials painful?

This light-based therapy results in a bright flash of light that penetrates the skin. It may feel warm with a snapping sensation on the skin. Dr. M. Christine Lee has her patients wear specialized goggles to protect the eyes and administer a cooling gel before treatment to make the treatment more comfortable. After treatment, patients are advised to use ice packs to keep the skin cool and reduce any possible discomfort.

What type of recovery is needed?

Most patients can return to their normal activities after treatments but may notice increased redness and swelling. This will resolve over time. Some patients may also notice peeling or darkening of the skin, which is just a sign that the treatment is working!
