Moles, Walnut Creek

What are moles?

Moles are clusters of pigmentation that can develop as a flat or raised growth on the skin. Many patients are born with moles, and some develop on the body over time. It is important that patients know that moles can also be an indicator for skin cancer, primarily when they begin to change in shape, size, or color. When patients come to The Skin and Laser Treatment Institute for removal of moles, Dr. M. Christine Lee will first evaluate it and may perform a biopsy to ensure the mole does not have cancerous cells. Once that has been cleared, the mole can be removed with mole removal surgery.

Surgical excision

Moles removed with surgical excision can be done quickly and easily right in our dermatologist’s office. The area is locally anesthetized before Dr. M. Christine Lee cuts the mole from the skin. In most cases, a small, minor scar may be left behind, but our team will do their best to ensure scarring does not occur after the procedure.

How to remove a raised mole

In other cases, patients may have their raised moles removed by shaving it down using a special tool that will remove the upper part, but not the mole entirely, so this needs to be discussed with patients prior to undergoing treatment so they fully understand the results of the service provided. This is done during the initial consultation visit with our dermatologist.
